The sun peaks its early morning rays through my window…not yet I think…it’s too early…it’s only 7am! I try covering my head with a pillow to block out the light, but shortly after, Kaya comes into my room, “Mama…I’m hungry, I’m thirsty, and I want to watch a movie,” she says. I sigh…
“Ok sweetheart… just give mommy a second…she’s still trying to wake up,” I respond. Why do kids and the sun have to wake up so early?!
“Ok, momma,” she replies, then she leaves to go downstairs to play in her room.
I roll onto my side and notice another little one has made her way into my bed. Evee is sound asleep with her blanket wrapped up in her arms. I smile looking at her sweet, peaceful face. She is wedged right up next to Ryan, who has his arm around her. I pause and think about how blessed I am. I have a pretty incredible family.
“I guess now is as good as ever to wake up,” I reason. I pull on my sweats and head into the kitchen to fix Kaya breakfast. As I’m flipping pancakes, I hear the shower turn on and Ryan’s favorite music turned up loud. I smile again, “Someone is up, happy, and ready to start the day.” Evee soon runs into the kitchen with a smile on her face. She hugs my legs and I kiss the top of her head. Kaya comes up the stairs and shouts, “Evee your awake! Let’s go play!”
This morning scene occurred on a regular basis and is one of the happiest memories I have of my sweet family. They, my family, are my motivation. I’ve contemplated what to write about the last several days and ‘motivation’ is what keeps coming to mind. What are my motives? Why do I do, what I do? Having positive motives and motivators are hugely important! Without some kind of motivation, we would never get anything accomplished. We need something to strive and live for in life. So, why do I do what I do? And what motivates me? Let me tell you.
My family motivates me! Ryan motivates me! My children motivate me! Every morning I get up, despite my physical and emotional limitations, for them! I live my life the best way I know how, so that I can be with them. My religion and faith motivate me! My friends motivate me! Running motivates me! Music motivates me. Mountain biking motivates me! Reading inspirational books motivates me.
The small day to day motivators and rituals are also important.
Joyful tears come to my eyes as I think of Ryan and his motivational morning rituals. Almost every morning, he would wake up and turn on his, “get pumped up music” and listen to it while he was in the shower. Positive music motivated him. Here’s a little sampling of what our mornings often sounded like 🙂
Another way he motivated himself in the morning was by taking ‘hot, cold’ showers. Now you may be asking yourself what is a ‘hot, cold’ shower? Lucky for you, I’m going to tell you.
The last two minutes of your shower you alternate between hot and cold. For 30 seconds you turn the water as hot as it will go, without burning yourself. Immediately after the hot water you turn the knob to as cold as you can stand, and let the water trickle down your back for another 30 seconds. It definitely takes your breath away. After alternating between hot and cold for two minutes, you end your shower on the cold and it leaves you feeling refreshed, awake, and ready to tackle your day! Hot, cold showers motivated him
Some of my day to day motivational rituals also include listening to music, reading, walking and running. There is something really calming and reassuring about walking or hiking amongst the trees and mountains. Every time I’m under the wide open sky I feel inspired and motivated to try my best.
What or who motivates you? How or what can you do better to stay motivated? I’m thankful to have people in my life who are consistently encouraging and motivating me! Let’s all do our best to stay motivated, even if it’s just in one thing, because that one thing will soon turn into two.
