Sushi, coloring, popcorn, spinning, mud, painting nails, playing dress up, bugs, lizards, worms, and…pink. These are some of the things my Evee loved…but she really…really loved the color pink. Evee had to have the pink cup, the pink plate, the pink dress, the pink dinosaur…she actually named her first toy dinosaur, Pinky. And for her Birthday this year, she was determined to have a pink party.
“Mama, since Kaya is having a yellow Birthday party…I want to have a pink party for my Birthday! Okay, Mama? I really want a pink party!” Evee says excitedly, as she tugs on the bottom of my shirt.
“I’m going to have a pink cake and pink balloons too!” she continues.
Today was Kaya’s Birthday party shopping day, but the excitement of celebrating her sister’s Birthday, made Evee even more excited for her winter Birthday…she couldn’t wait!
“Mom, I think I want these for my Birthday,” Evee smiles, showing me toy after toy at Zurcher’s (the ultimate party store). She wanted everything pretty and pink to be at her party.
“That would be fun huh baby girl?” I respond patiently…but still enthusiastically…so as not to spoil her excitement.
After what seems like hours… Kaya finally chooses the prizes for her yellow piñata…smiley face stress balls.
“Kaya can I have the pink one?” Evee asks sweetly, “You know I love pink…and your party is going to be yellow…right Kaya?”
“Oh alright…you can have the pink squishy face,” Kaya sighs.
Evee gives Kaya the biggest hug and offers to hold the sack of the small prizes on the way out of the store.
“I can hold the bag for you Kaya,” Evee beams.
Kaya looks down at the bag of goodies, then over to Evee’s smiling face…then reluctantly let’s her carry the special bag to the car.
Evee wanted to keep her pink prize close.
This week is my dear little one’s Birthday, she would have been five. We get the blessing and privilege of celebrating her short life. I’ve thought a lot about how we can honor Evee on her special day over the past week and I’ve decided the best way to show love for my baby girl is through small acts of service.
For the last month my Mom, Kaya, and I have been working on blankets to donate to local hospitals. On January 7th (Evee’s Birthday) we’re going to deliver the blankets to kick off our month of service, honoring both Evee and Ryan. Our month of service will start on Evee’s Birthday (January 7th) and end on Ryan’s Birthday, which is February 11th.
It’s my hope that many of you will join in our celebration of their lives this month by doing your own acts of service…in their names. I’ve made printable service cards that you can hand out each time you serve someone else. It might seem awkward and uncomfortable handing out cards to strangers, but I know that when we serve others willingly, we can find the truest joy in life. I also know Evee and Ryan are still serving so many people on both sides of the veil… they need our help in bringing the love and light of Christ to the world.
This week I’ll think of Evee every time I do something kind for someone else. Instead of waiting for service opportunities to come to me, I’m going to seek out opportunities to serve others myself. This week we’re going to celebrate our little girl and all the wonderful things about her! We’re going to eat pizza (one of her favorites) and have pink cake and ice cream. We’re going to have a pink party, with pink balloons and pink streamers …and pink…will forever represent…love, kindess, charity…and my Evee.
Print and cut to give out as you think of Ryan and Evee during this month of service
